The Punta Arenas Cemetery is located in the Port of Punta Arenas, Chile. The Port is situated on Brunswick Peninsula, the southernmost region of this South American country. It is on the western side of the Strait of Magellan. Punta Arenas was founded in 1848 and has an estimated population of 100,000. Cruise ships and scientific research vessels destined for Antarctic expeditions disembark from here.

My husband and I visited the former prison site plus the Naval Museum in Punta Arenas during our South American travels. We also booked a tour to a Penguin colony in Otway Bay north of the city. Given my interest in Genealogy, however, exploring the cemetery was a personal highlight. I hope you enjoy the photographs.

The cemetery is located in the northern area of the city.

Chile has designated the cemetery a National Museum.

The public cemetery was established in 1894.

The cemetery covers approximately four hectares or ten acres.
