Josephine Sodaro Bova (March 11, 1856 Termini Imerese, Palermo, Sicily, Italy to September 1, 1946 Ottawa, Ontario, Cabada) was an ancestor of my late maternal grandmother, Rose Mandia Lima.
In order to learn about her life, I examined many documents including the Province of Ontario, Registration of Death. Though I am still verifying some of the details, the following ten facts are what I have gleaned from my efforts.
- Josephine was born on March 11, 1856. Place of birth not specified.
- Josephine died on September 1, 1946, aged 90. She had resided at 258 Dalhousie Street, Nepean Township, Ottawa for 46 years.
- A widow, Josephine’s husband’s name was Michael Bova. Her parents, Salvatore Sodaro and Nicolina Romano, were born in Sicily.
- A housewife, Josephine was a Canadian citizen at the time of her death. Her racial origin, traced through her father, was stated as Italian.
- The immediate cause of Josephine’s death was indicated as urema (end-stage renal kidney disease).
- Josephine had also suffered from “morbid conditions” identified as chronic nephritis (kidney inflammation) and myocarditis (inflammation of the heart.)
-
Josephine’s grandson, Sam Mandia, was cited as the informant on the document. He had resided at 257 Dalhousie Street, Apt. 4 in Nepean Township, Ottawa.
- Sam Mandia certified that he had attended to his grandmother from August 24, 1946 to September 1, 1946. The last day that he had witnessed her alive was on August 31, 1946.
- Sam had obtained a burial permit at the Ottawa City Hall. He had entrusted arrangements to Racine Funeral Corporation, Ltd. Josephine was buried in Ottawa’s Notre-Dame Roman Catholic Cemetery on September 4, 1946.
- The medical certificate of death section on the form was signed by Josephine’s medical doctor (signature and address illegible) and dated, September 3, 1946.
